Point-of-care ultrasound in orthopedics: a skill or a standard?
Abstract
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool in orthopedic diagnostics, offering high accuracy in detecting fractures, joint effusions, and tendon injuries. Recent studies show that with minimal training, orthopedic surgeons and emergency physicians can use POCUS effectively, achieving diagnostic performances comparable to radiography. Its rapid execution, radiation-free nature, and applicability in pediatric and resource-limited settings make it a strong adjunct to traditional imaging. However, successful integration into orthopedic practice requires structured training and defined protocols. This letter discusses current evidence and proposes the incorporation of POCUS into routine orthopedic workflows.
